OUR MISSION is to honor the birthing rights of all women.

OUR GOALS are to:

• Honor the instinctive and intuitive nature of the doula role;

• Enhance the doula’s understanding and recognition of birth as a key life experience;

• Enhance the doula’s purpose to support women in the physical, emotional, and social needs during pregnancy, birth and postpartum;

• Teach doulas to support women in birth thereby decreasing the amount and frequency of interventions and unnecessary procedures used in hospitals;

• Protect the goals and desires of the birthing woman.

Doula Training and Certification Overview

The course is divided into four Modules of Study. Each Module includes required reading and writing assignments as well as detailed activities of study. Optional reading assignments are suggested.

A sample of required activities are:

• Attend a series of childbirth education classes

• Complete four hours instruction with a massage therapist

• Complete a current adult and infant CPR certification,

• Attend a series of Le Leche League meetings or equivalent,

• Visit hospitals and birth centers,

• Interview women who have birthed in different settings, with different support

• Interview care providers on their experience with a doula present at the birth and document support services as a doula to three clients.

Students may take up to 18 months to complete the course for certification.

Previous experience will be considered on an individual basis.

The course fee is $425, and includes modules, 2 required textbooks, and personal guidance throughout the coursework.

Opportunity for hands-on experience are available. Workshops and further training will become available.
